Instructions for Scoring a Standard Start Sailboat Race

Using The Klexy Soft, Rating Check and Yacht Race Programs

Download PHRF Valid Fleet List, Download Entrants list, Validate handicap ratings, Change class splits if necessary, then name and save the file for scoring.
  1. Connect to the internet if possible, then double click on the Klexy Soft folder Icon.

  2. Double Click on the Rating Check Program.

  3. Click on the Load PHRF Valid List button. The Rating Check Program will download the latest PHRF Fleet List and display sail numbers (stripped of non numeric values, e.g., OD or USA) and all four area handicap ratings for all boats in the right hand Data Grid View table.

  4. Click on the Load Entrants List button. An Open File Dialog form will open. Select the correct file and double click it. The Validation Program will download all entrants, including their claimed handicap. The data will be displayed in the left hand Data Grid View table.

  5. Click on the Check/Validate Ratings button.  The column Valid will display ?? for all boats that claim ratings that don't match the ratings listed in the PHRF Fleet List. Just to the right of the Check/Validate Ratings button is a text box indicating how many Entrant's Ratings are not Validated.  It will show No Cert in the Cert column if no certificate is listed in the Fleet List. See note below

  6. If the Race Chairman would like to change the class splits, Click on the Show Class Splits Panel.  The panel will open on the right side showing likely rating range numbers for AA, A, B, C, D, Cruiser Class A and Cruiser Class B boats.  Change the (Min and Max) numbers as necessary.

  7. Click on the Sort Into Classes (Column 1) button.  The Class column, on the far left will show the classes that boats have been assigned to.  On the far right it will show how many boats are in each class.

  8. Click on the Save .txt File for Scoring Button.  A Save File Dialog form will open.  Type an appropriate file name, for example 2019 Berger 1 Starters.  It will be saved in the PHRF List folder.  This is the file that will be loaded into the Yacht Race Program to score the race.  It would be wise to make an extra copy for backup.

  9. Close the Program.

Note the 3 Radio buttons at the top of the form. These are to select the correct ratings for a Windward Leeward Course (WLC),  a Random Leg Course (RLC) or a One Way Course (OWC).  The Random Leg Course is the default button which is checked when you open the program. Since the Entrant List file does not identify the race course type, it is necessary to be able to compare the entrants handicap rating with any of the three types of courses. You can easily perform this comparison by checking one of the other Radio Buttons and repeating step 5.
